Recently, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) witnessed the swearing-in ceremony of nine newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs. The event took place in Abuja, where INEC chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu extended his congratulations to the appointees.

Addressing the gathered officials, Prof. Yakubu highlighted the extensive experience of the newly appointed RECs in electoral operations, election and party monitoring, and electoral litigation. He emphasized that for several INEC career officers appointed as RECs, there should be no learning curve, and they were expected to hit the ground running to enhance the quality and transparency of elections.

Furthermore, Prof. Yakubu stressed that accountability and adherence to election laws and codes of conduct were paramount for the RECs. He urged them to uphold justice and transparency at all times.

Additionally, Prof. Yakubu mentioned that INEC would soon release the timetable and activity calendar for the re-run election following the 2023 general elections, combining it with bye-elections in constituencies with vacancies in the legislative houses due to the deaths or resignations of serving members.
