An attack at Perm State University in Russia’s Ural mountains on Monday morning, September 20, resulted in at least eight deaths and over ten injuries.
The assailant, dressed in black and visibly armed, entered the building, but was later reported to have been killed by the police.
Witnesses described people trying to flee the building upon hearing the shots, with some locking themselves in classrooms and others resorting to leaping from windows.
An urgent message released by the university instructed those inside to secure themselves in rooms and stay put, while advising those on the campus to leave if possible and turn back if en route to the university.
The suspect, reportedly identified as Timur Bekmansurov, 18, and a university student, was eventually subdued after being overpowered.
Prior to the attack, the suspect had sent messages indicating a desire to cause harm and described himself as “unstoppable.” He expressed a determination to inflict pain and vowed to target as many people as possible.
The attacker’s firearm, a Turkish-made 12-caliber Huglu rifle, was intricately linked to his prolonged planning of the massacre, culminating in the assault at the university.
