Forget all the other races, when black comedians take to the mic, their banter and antics leave onlookers in the thrall. They generally maintain close ties with the public. They feel like they grow up bringing up life experiences that most people can relate to and making a big joke out of it. Over time, we’ve seen many of them fade away and fade away, while so many others have remained relevant to this day. In fact, the sheer number of successful black comedians makes it difficult to compile a list of just 10 influential black comedians who are making a difference in the industry.

1. Martin Lawrence

Named after civil rights leader Martin Luther, King Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence was born in West Germany on April 16, 1965. His African-American parents were in the military at the time of his birth. He tried many things including boxing and then grew to become one of the best in his career as a comedian, actor, producer, talk show host and writer.

3. Kevin Hart

He’s among the youngest (born July 6, 1979) and wealthiest on the list of influential black comedians and we’re not surprised at all. Raised by a single mother with his drug-addicted father making frequent trips to prison, Kevin Hart didn’t have it easy. He briefly worked as a shoe salesman before trying his hand at stand-up comedy, making an impression with his performances in Philadelphia clubs.

Born on January 17, 1957, the younger generation may know Steve Harvey as an American comedian, television host, producer, radio personality, actor, and author who hosts many television shows like Steve Harvey’s Morning Show, Family Feud, Celebrity Family Feud, Little Big Shots , and the Miss Universe pageant (where he once crowned the wrong queen). But before he was all that, the comedian had done all sorts of things to keep body and soul together. He was a salesman, postman, boxer and many more before his first gig as a comedian in 1985, which helped his star shine.
